The benefits of an effective morning routine

Making the most of your mornings is the best way to make the most of your day. 

The day at Mogul News starts early. Some of you have been asking how our small team manages to make the most out of each morning. I thought I’d share my morning routine to give you some idea of how we prepare for a new day at Mogul New HQ.

An effective morning routine gets you physically prepared, mentally prepared and prepared for what you’ll face throughout the day.

I enjoy mornings more, am better prepared for the day ahead and get more done first thing as well.

The alarm goes off at 5.20 AM. Feet touch the floor at 5.30. I have a glass of water with raw apple cider vinegar and sea salt (it doesn’t taste great but really good for you) to help invigorate me – left there the night before.

I start with a 15-minute guided meditation (I use Oak). It really helps me feel grounded and ready for the day. 

I head to the kitchen and get myself an espresso to sip while I read some of the articles on Mogul News I’d chosen from the day before. I also take some time to write down all I want and need to do that day. I review my list from yesterday and see how things went. At the beginning, I used to dread these moments of contemplation. Of future planning and past reviewing. Now they’re one of the highlights.

Fifteen minutes, my lists are done, my coffee is finished.

I make my breakfast. Usually yoghurt with sliced fruit and seeds. Or scrambled eggs (protein is great to start the day with). It’s one of the decision I leave to the moment. You always know what you’d prefer and switches from day to day.

I read a book while I have my breakfast. Someone once told me, when I was complaining about not reading enough, why don’t I just read more. It is really that simple.  

I pack my bag, using my to-do list to make sure I’ve got everything I need for the day. Usually, it’s lunch and my laptop. I leave home at 6.30am. The time leftover lets me pick from the already curated articles I can enjoy over that lunch. Then I cycle to the office. 

When I get there, I check the Mogul News Briefing. It takes less than 5 minutes but I know I will be caught up on the main stories of the day. Before the Briefings, I relied on the radio or reading news online. I found the radio too intrusive and caught myself browsing all sorts on my phone if I used it to check the news.

Exercise in the morning is vital. A bike ride is a good start, but I also like to hit the gym before starting work. I get a quick workout in before sitting down at my desk, ready and prepared for the day ahead.

For me, the morning routine makes sure I am taking care of myself physically, emotionally and mentally before each day, then ready for the challenges ahead.
