In this week’s Perspective, we look at what challenges are facing Elon Musk’s Tesla. Here’s a quick note from our editor about what we cover in this week’s Perspective!
Elon Musk is known for three things. SpaceX, Tesla, and his Twitter account. While all three attract a lot of attention, Tesla is the most important part of his empire. It already boasts an impressive history. Founded in 2003, Musk came on early as its principal investor. He soon took over the business and it took the usual startup route of burning cash chasing growth.
And growth came. From the launch of the first Roadster in 2008, Tesla has built a total of over 600,000 cars. But there are still challenges ahead for the startup automaker. Tax subsidies in the US have been cut, causing a fall in demand. International expansion is hampered by logistics issues and the power of China’s domestic electric vehicle makers. But Musk is blasé about those threats. Is he right? Or does Tesla face more of a problem than he thinks?
