On Sunday night President Donald Trump tweeted a message saying that US forces wouldn’t stand in the way of a Turkish invasion of northern Syria. This would hit the Kurdish forces, who the Turkish government identifies as terrorists, that have been the key units in rolling back Islamic State.
Political allies and rivals of President Trump were quick to condemn the move. It was seen as abandoning friends who have helped clean up a mess America helped create.
But is it as simple as that? The Syrian Civil War has drawn in major world powers, as well as regional ones. Turkey, Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the US all have some involvement in the war.
Was the announcement an ill-thought-out move after an Ankara-Washington D.C. phone call? Or does it represent Trump successfully navigating a fraught situation, pitting allies of American against each other?
